Set in present day New Zealand, Māori elder Hamo discharges herself from a hospital, packs up her life and goes on a road trip. While driving she’s distracted and drives into a young girl, Jo. Hamo helps her but in exchange Jo steals her car and trashes it. Hamo tries to get it back, but everything is gone including old family treasures. Hamo gets Jojo arrested then realising how unsafe in jail, Jo is, Hamo gets her released. The two continue traveling together. Jo’s unrelenting humour eventually breaks down Hamo’s barriers and she slowly begins to open up. For a moment Hamo is happy but then Jo is in a car accident and dies. Instead of succumbing to grief, Hamo continues the journey and brings Jo with her intent on giving the girl the home she couldn’t find in life. But when she finally gets there, she realises that everywhere she’s been up to this point has been leading her toward a deeper realisation.
